Cres is the main town and tourist center of the entire island situated on
the northeastern part of the large and well protected bay that abounds with
beautiful beaches. Cres has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeologists
find, as evidenced, the remains from prehistoric and Roman times as well as
of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century. The town is marked today
by the medieval harbor "Mandrac, Gothic and Renaissance churches and monasteries,
palaces of noble families and the remains of the town walls.
The most famous cultural and entertainment events are the city's festivities
which are held once a week, and the famous Lubenice musical evenings with many
local and foreign contractors. October is reserved for the famous Regatta Cres-CUP.
In Cres bay south of the city is placed a modern marina with berths and a multitude
of services, which makes Cres one of the of the favorite nautical bases in
the northern Adriatic.
Taste the gastronomic specialties of ecologically grown lamb, fruits and vegetables,
and some dishes with asparagus and well-known medicinal brandy.
