North Dalmatia

The region Dalmatia extends where the Adriatic Sea and Dinaric Highlands meet. It represents one of the most interesting Mediterranean wonders of nature with untouched natural beauty and crystal clear sea. North Dalmatia - the youngest Croatian tourist destination - stretches from the island of Pag in the north to the south the town of Primosten. Northern Islands are listed as one of the most indented and the largest islands in Croatia. They are divided in the Zadar and Sibenik group.

In this area, very suitable for sailing, there are about 500 islands and islets. The most famous islands in North Dalmatia are the island of Pag, Island Ugljan, Silba, Island Vir, Island Murter, Pasman, island Krapanj, Iz, Zlarin, Molat, and island group in the National Park and Park Nature Park on Long Island.

The coastline is separated from the country side by high mountain of Velebit. Northern Dalmatia Area has a rich history, of which many ancient villages testify, Roman historical monuments and well-preserved medieval towns.

Zadar is the capital of northern Dalmatia, while the main center of the southern part of this area is Sibenik. In northern Dalmatia, there are three national parks: NP Kornati, Krka and Paklenica.

The National Park Kornati includes around 140 islands, islets and reefs. Due to the exceptional scenery, interesting geomorphology, large indented coastline and rich marine ecosystem, in the 1980 most of the Kornati archipelago was declared a national park. Today Kornati National Park occupies an area of 220 km2 and includes 89 islands and islets, with approximately 238 km of coastline. Kornati are a true paradise for boaters and hikers. The first traces of the presence of man dates from the Neolithic, however except for a few cottages on several islands, Kornati have remained mainly uninhabited. Exceptionally clear sea, plenty of sun, numerous coves, bays and harbours are sufficient invitation to visit the Kornati islands.

Krka National Park stretches over 75 km and is a true natural and karstic phenomenon with a series of travertine dams, waterfalls and rapids that will leave you breathless. When you visit the Krka National Park do not miss to see Skradinski buk - latest and the most beautiful waterfall, Visovac - island which hosts Franciscan monastery with a rich library, Krka Monastery, and the picturesque ancient town Skradin.

Paklenica National Park is one of the youngest national park in Croatia and world-famous Alpine destination. Monumental canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica, the collision of Mediterranean and mountain climate, endemic plants and many animal species are reasons for the arrival of more than a million visitors a year.
