A question we are often asked is - "how does it work if I want to hire a skipper with my yacht charter?" So, we wanted to explain some of the advantages of hiring a skipper and answer some of the FAQs. Naturally, everyone without sailing experience or the required licenses will need to charter with a skipper. However, even if you have experience, there are still some advantages to chartering with a skipper, so read on.
Advantages of Chartering with a Skipper
Safety and Peace of Mind
There are many advantages to chartering a yacht with a skipper, first and foremost being safety and security. All of our skippers have years of experience and know our yachts intimately, this knowledge and experience instantly put people at ease. The skipper checks the forecast and plans the route accordingly, and if the weather turns, they know the safest marinas and anchorages. When you leave the boat to explore ashore, you can feel secure knowing that the yacht is safe. Basically, chartering with a skipper gives you peace of mind and lets you focus on the important things – like enjoying quality, stress-free time with your family and friends.
A local skipper can also explain the history, surroundings and advise on the best destinations, beaches, activities (wine tours, scuba diving etc.) clubs or restaurants to visit. Sailing Croatia with an experienced skipper lets you see Croatia through the eyes of a local.
Learn New Skills
Sailing with an experienced skipper gives you a great opportunity to learn new skills. Whether you are a sailing novice or experienced, there is always something to learn, and your skipper will be happy to share his knowledge. Sailing with a local skipper is the best sailing school possible; you will get the first-hand experience from a passionate, knowledgeable and experienced sailor. You will be hooked on sailing in no time, and maybe it will even inspire you to join our Hanse Cup Regatta!
FAQ about Chartering with a Skipper
Does the skipper speak English or any other languages?
All skippers who work with Croatia Yachting speak Croatian and are fluent in English. If you or your party are not comfortable with English, we also have crew fluent in other languages.
Tip: multilingual crew get booked first, so you should book ASAP.
Can we make specific requests regarding the skipper?
Absolutely and we will do everything we can to make this happen. If you have special requests like – “Age (younger/older), good with kids, non-smoker, knows good party spots…” Whatever it may be, just let us know; the more information we have, the better we can match the perfect skipper for you.
Do you assign a skipper or do we get to choose?
Our standard procedure is that we gather as much information about you and your party as possible (i.e. preferences, yacht, itinerary), then we send you 2 – 3 CVs, and you choose your captain.
How much does a skipper cost?
Typically, crew fees depend on the level of their experience and size of the yacht. However, to help you budget, the cost of a skipper is usually between 150 – 200 EUR per day. This fee does not include meals for the crew; your crew can either join you for meals or allow 30 EUR per crew member, per day. Also, note that this fee does not include gratuity.
Where does the skipper sleep?
If you plan to charter a yacht with a skipper (and/or hostess), it is best to charter a yacht which already has separate crew cabins. If crew accommodation is not planned in the layout, then it is custom to leave one cabin for the skipper/hostess. Sometimes skippers sleep in the saloon but this is not something we advise as the crew need time to rest so they can give you their best.
How involved is the skipper, what if we want privacy?
We are asked this question many ways – “what if we don’t want the skipper to always be with us” or “we value our privacy”. Alternatively, we also hear – “we would like the skipper to be actively involved in our holiday”. The easy answer is – both are possible. Every group is different, and our skippers adjust accordingly. If you want more privacy, the skipper will respect your wishes and stay out of your way as much as possible. However, if you want interaction and conversation, the skipper will also be happy to oblige. Communicate openly with your skipper throughout the week, and we trust you will find a perfect rhythm with your skipper.
Do we need to tip?
Tipping is discretionary, not compulsory; HOWEVER, it is recommended. A good crew goes above and beyond to make sure it is your best holiday ever, so a tip is a gesture of appreciation for their hard work. The recommended tip and industry standard is 10 – 20% of the charter price.
