South Damatia is the southernmost region of Croatia that covers the area south
of the river Neretva, Peljesac peninsula and Dubrovnik in southern Croatian
coast which borders with Montenegro in the Bay of Kotor Bay. South Dalmatian
islands are Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and Elafitski Islands.
The valley of the Neretva River with beautiful flow in the Adriatic Sea and
extremely fertile soil is a unique natural phenomenon. Once swamp area, now
is an important agricultural zone that stands out from the rest of the Croatian
coast and can be called "green pearl" of the Croatian Adriatic.
Peljesac Peninsula, the second largest in Croatia, it is certainly a must
see for all gourmets due to developed oyster farming and the production of
excellent red wine Dingač.
The island of Mljet is the most wooded islands. A third of the island belongs
to the Mljet National Park because of its exceptional natural beauty, flora
and fauna, beaches, fishing grounds and lobster, and many cultural and historical
monuments make it a very attractive tourist destination.
Korcula is an island of shipbuilders and stone carvers. While visiting Korcula,
you shouldn’t miss to attend performance of Moreska, a dance that represents
dynamic combat with swords, which is only performed in Korcula town, for more
than 4 centuries. It is assumed that Moreška came from Spain, and that began
displaying in Korcula in the 16th century as a memory of the victory against
the notorious Algerian generals Uluz-Ali. Dance is performed by two groups
of dancers in red and black costumes who fight to gain the affection of the
princess Bula. According to the legend, Korcula is a home town of famous Marco
Polo.
Be sure not to miss out to visit the island of vineyards and olive groves
- Lastovo, and experience the beauty of untouched nature distant island, located
on the open sea, lush tropical vegetation and a mild climate, clean air and
crystal clear sea.
Elafiti islands are located on the west side in the vicinity of Dubrovnik.
Due to the natural beauty and climate, Elafiti Islands, through history have
been the place for relaxation and enjoyment of captains, sailors and nobility
of the Dubrovnik Republic, while today considered a very attractive tourist
resort. In the group of Elafiti islands include Sipan, Lopud and Kolocep.
You certainly shouldn’t forget the most beautiful city in southern Dalmatia,
a city of museums and festivals, taverns and restaurants, a place of gentle
Mediterranean climate and beautiful landscapes - Dubrovnik. In the vicinity
of Dubrovnik in Trsteno is placed the oldest arboretum in the world from the
fifteenth century. The oldest trees in the arboretum are 400 years old.
