Cres is the main town and tourist centre of the entire island situated on the north-eastern part of the large and well protected bay that abounds with beautiful beaches.
Cres has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeologists find, as evidenced, the remains from prehistoric and Roman times as well as of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century. The town is marked today by the medieval harbour "Mandrac”, Gothic and Renaissance churches and monasteries, houses of noble families and the remains of the town walls.
The most famous cultural and entertainment events are the city's festivities, which are held once a week, and the famous Lubenice musical evenings with many local and foreign participants. October is reserved for the famous Regatta Cres-CUP. The modern marina located in the bay just south of the city center enhances Cres’s reputation as a favorite nautical base in the northern Adriatic. It offers extensive services and facilities for sailors and serves as a perfect starting point to explore the surrounding waters.
Gastronomy in Cres is a reflection of its rich natural resources and commitment to ecological sustainability. Visitors can indulge in local specialties such as ecologically raised lamb, fresh seafood, and seasonal dishes featuring locally grown fruits, vegetables, and wild asparagus.
