Povlja, located in a secluded harbour on the northeastern coast of Brač, is a small Dalmatian settlement with a population of approximately 360 people. Surrounded by several coves including Luka, Tičja Luka, Tatinja, Smokvica, and Travnja, the settlement has a peaceful atmosphere that is occasionally disrupted by the sounds of traditional stonemasonry. However, during the summer months, the village comes alive with greater bustle, which adds to the natural beauty that surrounds it. Nonetheless, Povlja is best recognized for the Povaljska listina, the oldest known written document in Bosancica, which was published by the Benedictine monastery of St. John the Baptist on December 1, 1250. This important document, which details the monastery's properties, has helped Povlja gain a widespread reputation.
